BETHANY – The Bethany College women’s basketball team lost to #1 Thomas More 87-62 Saturday afternoon in Hummel Fieldhouse.
The loss drops the Bison record to 6-8 in the PAC and 11-12 overall. Thomas More improves to 23-0 on the season, including 14-0 in the conference.
With the score 19-11 in favor of TMC halfway through the first half, the Saints used a 15-3 run to increase their lead to 20. A lay-up by sophomore Kayla Taormina (Center Twp., Pa./Quigley) ended the Thomas More run. Just before the half, the Saints would score nine of the last 11 points to increase their lead to 45-23 at the intermission.
Junior Anne Wilson (Saegertown, Pa./Cambridge Springs) would pace the Bison with eight first-half points, which was highlighted by the first five points for BC, as well as a pair of threes. Junior Kelly Zogran (Pittsburgh, Pa../Thomas Jefferson) pitched in five points off the bench. Thomas More shot a blistering 52 percent from the field in the first half and was paced by Nicole Dickman’s 18 points. The Saints have the best defense in the PAC and it showed by allowing the Bison to shoot just 32 percent from the field.
BC would get five quick points from junior Katelynn Hackathorn (Valley Grove, W.Va./Wheeling Park) to start the second half. However the Saints opened it up in the second half by pushing their lead to as many as 35 points. Junior Renee Shepherd (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) scored nine of her team-high 11 points in the second half, as the Green and White trimmed some off their deficit in the final five minutes. The Bison would also get 20 points from their bench in the second half.
The Bison were led in the game by Shepherd’s 11 and Hackathorn chipped in nine points and eight rebounds. Bethany’s bench outscored the Saints 31-19 and had 21 points off Thomas More turnovers.
The Saints were led by Dickman’s game-high 22 points and Chelsea Tolliver’s 18 points. Thomas More would shoot 52 percent from the field, including a strong 56 percent (9-16) from long range.
The Bison’s next game is schedule for Wednesday evening in Hummel Field House against Chatham. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
