Small School Collin Kalaher from Heartland Christian…. Those 2 are the best Sophs in the OVAC. Heartland plays a lot of bigger schools in hoops as well. Dominated Frontier in the 1A game.

No Football at Heartland. He was the starting QB at Fitch as a soph.

      Him and Haney.

17 year old sophomore? Think you maybe mean 16

Imagine being a parent and or an adult and not maximizing your child’s potential. Which includes, when to start school. There is boatloads of data that supports sending your child to school later and or holding them back early on. You will be intelligent your whole life no matter your age but you only get 4 years to make an impact.

Only a dufus would celebrate graduating early and also try to laugh at a kid being older in his grade. You really are the oldest kid in HS 1 year. I will also say he’s probably going to be 1 of the few who get real money to play sports beyond HS in 2 years. So his parents will be the ones laughing the loudest.

There is a long list of athletes at Steubenville who maximized their potential, got scholarships in sports, by not being the 16-17 year old senior.

No one cares your age at the college level. Just if your mentally and physically mature enough to do it..

I’ve been saying it for 12 years on here At least…. I am amazed often at what folks try to laugh at on here about Steubenville and or there kids. Yet they have 1
of the best districts in the entire state. You would think others close by would try to emulate what they do.

100% agree. I hate my parents! haha.

I was fortunate to receive my best financial offer during the summer of my senior year as a 17-year-old. I am satisfied with my decision to play there (DII). But I know I would have benefited on many levels if I had played two more years of high school sports; my freshman year as a 14-year-old was a waste of time; it was as if I only made the teams because they knew I'd be solid in a year or two and my sophomore year was just bumping heads with some garbage seniors.

*Haney turned 17 in early January 2025, not December. He will graduate as a 19-year-old senior.

Not saying you're right or wrong but could you name some on that long list? I mean that earned scholarships that they wouldn't have earned if they graduated with their original class.

They all graduated in there correct class. Starting late and or staying back doesn’t mean not in original class. You got 4 years….. Maximize them.

Staying back definitely means it's not your original class.

Besides just athletics, there is a massive academic advantage to being an older HS kid that can equate to larger scholarships.

"Massive academic advantage"? Not following this logic, how does being a year older than the members of your graduating class make you smarter?? If you repeat kindergarten, you might be ahead of your class, because you already learned the material. But the smarter kids will catch up and the smartest kids will rise to the top. Using this logic the top 10 of any given class would be the ten oldest kids in the class...

Maybe not smarter, but maturity may play a role in a better academic focus, leading to better grades. GPA plays a huge role in the amount of scholarship money available.

There is a large difference between a 17 year old senior and a 19 year old senior. I'm more referring to kids that were sent a year later to school rather than held back a year in school. Sure there are outliers, but research suggests that kids that are older for their respective grade levels have an academic advantage. I've linked two research articles below if you are interested.

Starting kindergarten later could boost kids' grades and improve their odds of attending a top college. Being the youngest kid in class can hurt their academic performance.
