    Martins Ferry Relay

Next Tuesday are the Martins Ferry Relays and should be an interesting meet since it is a true relay meet. All Field Events will have three entrants from each school to come up with a total for a team win in the event. The running events will also include a 4x800, Sprint Medley Relay, Distance Medley Relay, Shuttle Hurdle Relay and 4x400 Relay. There will also be a few open events thrown in. The meet begins at 3:15 with the field events, while Semi Finals in the running will take place at 4:15. Finals will begin at 5:15.

Team running in the meet include: Martins Ferry, Union Local, Steubenville, Buckeye Local, Indian Creek, Shadyside, Bellaire, Wheeling Central and St. John Central.

On a side note, Ferry's Anthony Phillips ran a 11.0 in the 100 last night, while their shuttle team went down to 1:01.6.

Why isn't St. Clairsville running in this meet? Isn't Ferry letting STC use their track for practice? I would think STC would show their appreciation by participating. Their entry fee as well as their large fan base would put $$ into Ferry's program.

From looking at St. C's track schedule, it appears that Kelly Rhine is looking to pad the coffers of Meadowbrook.

In my opinion, the Ferry Relays gives a team a chance to build unity. Unlike a dual meet, your 2nd & 3rd athlete has an oppurtunity to shine and contribute to the team scoring. Why not give your team a chance to compete in unique meet in our local area? Guess only a few people can answer that question.

Which brings up a question for next year......where will Martins Ferry go next year when St. C has tenatively scheduled their home invitational the same day as the Bellaire Relays?

Since Meadowbrook hosts both the District and Regional Meets in which St. Clairsville athletes will participate, I totally understand and would recommend having the team compete in a meet there during the "regular season." However, dual meets can be scheduled and rescheduled at the drop of a hat. I originally heard the Red Devils had been "shut out" of the Ferry Relays because they had applied late and Ferry already had a sufficient number of teams competing to fill one heat of all running events. If the first post is accurate and there are already 9 teams competing, it does not seem that a tenth team would make much of a difference since 2 sections of most of the relays will need to be run anyway.

As far as having a STC Invite on the same day as The Bellaire Relays, I hope what Dats Right is hearing is inaccurate. First of all, STC better start small and work their way up to running an Invitational. Otherwise, you will be hearing comments like those being made about the UL Doan Ford Meet. Secondly, most Local Registered Officials (like me) are already committed to the Bellaire Meet and I would expect them to stay loyal to that meet as most (like me) also have some ties to Blair.

          Richsrunner,
I heard the same thing concerning the St. C. home invite date while at our Tuesday meet at Bellaire with St. Clairsville.

I was born and raised on river water and am damn proud of it. As they say: “Once a Big Red, always a Big Red.”

The possibility of STC even thinking about putting up their meet against the Bellaire Relays ticks me off and it should upset all area T&F Fans. I realize the meet ain't what it used to be but it still has lots of tradition and remains "sacred" in my book. The terms “last Saturday in April” and “Ask someone who has been there” are synonymous with the Bellaire Relays.

From what I know about the Ferry Relays, St. Clairsville wasn't able to get in time, and by the time they let St. Clairsville know they could be fit it, their schedule was done. Next year, I am sure that the Relays would be happy to have St. Clairsville in their list of participants. I think St. John Central will not have very many relay teams entered, so it will be a moot point about having nine teams. They will still be able to run just one heat in the relays.

Thanks for the clarification; I hope you have a great meet at Ferry along with a good crowd. Meanwhile, I have to drive all the way to Byesville.

The rumor that St. Clairsville will have an invitational on the last Saturday in April next year or anytime in the near future can be laid to rest. I spoke with Kelly Rine last night and he indicated that STC has no intentions of putting on an invitational meet the same day as the Bellaire Relays. In addition to the possible conflict with teams and officials, the STC Prom often falls on that date.

Nope, STC basically took the weekend off. The coaches and team don't like the idea of "splitting up" for 2 different meets (boys at Park, girls at Bellaire)and also many of the athletes are taking the ACTs on Saturday morning. However, I think a couple of girls may run distance events at Bellaire on Saturday afternoon.

Rich, glad you were able to put to rest the rumor of St. C hosting their invitational the last Saturday in April. As Tyler stated, I heard the rumor while in Blair at a track meet, too.

You wouldn't be implying that St. C wants to host their invitational on the same weekend as the Park Classic/Bellaire Girls Invitation? Curious minds need to know!

I have no inside information with regards to that but it would seem to make sense to me. They could have it on a Friday Night and eliminates the problem with the ACT test.

Rich can I make a suggestion? The date would change every year but they could have it the Thursday night before Easter.
