As some of our loyal readers and Streamcast viewers know Jeff and I have the most incredible adventures on our Friday night football trips, this trip was no different. First, we did arrive a bit late and it was our own fault, but it started with us leaving a little bit late, because well life happens. However, Jeff and I both love to eat. So, stopping prior to the game was mandatory for us. We want to give Wings Etc. in Marietta shout out for having some of the best wings ever.
We finally make it to the game after Wheeling Park scores the game’s first points by scoring a touchdown early in the first quarter coming from quarterback, Brett Phillips, scramble for a long touchdown run. We did get to see Parkersburg South’s Cyrus Taugh answer the call with a punt return to put South on the board as the musket goes off to celebrate.
Soon after Wheeling Park shows off their speed and aerial attack with a 43-yard touchdown pass from Phillips to Jerrae Hawkins. Parkesburg South again answers making a field goal after a nice offensive drive. Keeping Wheeling Park in the lead at this point 14-10.
Park will add to their lead on a stellar catch by yet another standout receiver for Wheeling Park, Mykel Davis, who seemed to come from nowhere to catch a deep ball from Phillips. Both Hawkins and Davis showed incredible speed on the natural grass field of South Friday night. This took the score to 21-10 and appeared to give Wheeling Park a huge advantage in the game. You just had the feel that this was going to be Park’s night.
However, Wheeling Park’s defense, still in the first half, held South forcing them to punt and that is when the night took a turn to South’s favor. A bad bounce with the punt return forced a Wheeling Park turnover deep in their end and Parkersburg South’s Robert Shockley makes them pay on a touchdown run. South adds a 2-point conversion making the score now 21-18 shortly before the half.
The score remains 21-18 at the half but you can feel the winds a changing. South came out after the half and built on the momentum they had going into the locker room with a Gage Wright touchdown giving them a 25-21. Adding to that in the fourth Shockey added yet another rushing touchdown to give South a 32-21 lead.
The game really felt like a game of two halves with Park dominating the first and South dominating the second. Wheeling Park did not go away quietly with Phillips rushing for another touchdown late in the game to 32-27 South. That is where the score ended for both teams that played hard on this nice Friday evening in Parkersburg.
Ohio Valley Athletics wants to thank the staff and administration of Parkersburg South for the wonderful treatment down there. It truly is an impressive atmosphere for a high school football game. We elaborate a bit more on that in our weekly Streamcast that you can find here on our home page at Ovathletics.com.
