MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– West Virginia University Director of Athletics Oliver Luck today announced the schedule for the upcoming 2011 women’s soccer season.
“Nikki (Izzo-Brown) has put together an exciting and challenging schedule for the fall season,” says Luck. “We look forward to defending our BIG EAST tournament title and working with the BIG EAST office to host an exciting championship weekend in November.”
Seven opponents on this year’s slate appeared in the 2010 NCAA tournament – Connecticut, Georgetown, Marquette, Ohio State, Penn State, USF and Virginia.
“We are looking forward to an exciting 2011 season,” says coach Izzo-Brown. “Our schedule has a good mix of conference and non-conference opponents that will help prepare us to make a deep postseason run.”
West Virginia will play nine matches this fall at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium, also the site of the 2011 BIG EAST Championship. WVU’s home opener is scheduled for Aug. 21 against Purdue.
The Mountaineers will take to the road for nine contests, including the season opener on Aug. 19 at regional foe Virginia.
WVU will play in one tournament this fall: the 2011 Penn State Invitational. West Virginia will face tournament host Penn State on Aug. 26, followed by a match against George Mason on Aug. 28.
The month of September features matches against Ohio State, Marshall and High Point before the conference opener at USF on Sept. 15. WVU’s BIG EAST home opener is slated for Sept. 18 versus Marquette.
The Mountaineers will play only two matches at home in October before closing the season with trips to Providence, Connecticut and Pitt.
Ten teams qualify for the conference championship, which takes place on campus sites during first round and quarterfinal play. WVU will play host to semifinal games on Friday, Nov. 4, and the championship game will follow on Sunday, Nov. 6. The winner of the championship game will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
