BUCKHANNON – The West Liberty University baseball team couldn’t make an early lead stand up here Tuesday night as West Virginia Wesleyan rallied to a 21-4 victory under the lights at Hank Ellis Field.
D.J. Nichols put the Hilltoppers on top, 2-0, with a two-run single in the top of the first and West Liberty carried that advantage into the bottom of the third.
That’s when the host Bobcats went ahead for good with a four-run uprising that opened the floodgates. Wesleyan scored at least two runs in every frame the rest of the way in the scheduled 9-inning contest.
Derek Daugherty had an RBI triple for the Hilltoppers while Trent Chapman doubled in a losing cause.
West Liberty and the Bobcats return to Hank Ellis Field Wednesday at 1 p.m. to close out the rare mid-week series with a doubleheader.
