Donning a dress shirt and a blue blazer, Evgeni Malkin became the highlight of the NHL Awards in Las Vegas, winning the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Trophies.
The Hart Trophy goes to the most valuable player as voted by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Malkin led the league in scoring, finishing as the only player to eclipse 100 points with 109 in 75 games.
Evgeni Malkin beat out 60 goal scorer Steven Stamkos and New York Rangers’ goalie Henrik Lundqvist who took home his first Vezina Trophy.
The players seemed to agree that Evgeni Malkin was the league MVP as they voted to award Malkin the Ted Lindsay Trophy, formally known as the Lester B. Pearson award.
Meanwhile, Erik Karlsson collected his first Norris Trophy as league’s top defenseman, Ken Hitchcock won the Jack Adams award as coach of the year (previously held by Dan Bylsma), Gabriel Landeskog won the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year, and Patrice Bergeron won the Selke award for best defensive forward.
The award ceremony capped off what has been a tremendous year for the 25 year old Russian superstar. After tearing his knee in February of last year, Malkin spent his offseason ferociously rehabbing and training to get back into shape. With his conditioning at an elite-level, Evgeni Malkin dominated the world. After winning the Art Ross Trophy as the league leader in points, Malkin took his game to the World Championships in Stockholm and Helsinki where he led the tournament in scoring en route to Russian gold.
