Anything the Pirates can do, San Diego can do better.Despite another quality start against the Padres the Pirates were unable to capitalize offensively. The Pirates would get just one hit though the first six innings. Padre’s starter John Garland allowed a total of six bases running in his six innings on the mound with the lone hit from Ryan Doumit.
Garland would also score the first and only run they needed. The bats would remain quiet after that to complete the 4 hit shutout. This did not help starter Zack Duke, who put in a quality start. Too bad the six hits and three runs he gave up was the difference in the game.
The 3-0 loss marks the first time in their history that they have been completely swept, 0-6, by the Padres. The loss also marks their seventh road loss in a row. The Pirates are also 7 games shy of clinching their 18th consecutive losing season.
They will continue their road trip Friday evening in Houston.
