WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College junior right-handed pitcher Eddie Nogay (Weirton, W.Va./Madonna) was named a 2013 D3baseball.com Second Team All-American on Wednesday morning.
Nogay, the website’s Mideast Region Pitcher of the Year, is W&J’s first baseball All-American since Sam Mann ’07 was honored in 2007. Nogay’s second-team selection is the highest distinction by a W&J baseball player since W&J Athletic Hall of Famer Tim Boal ’78 was a First Team ABCA/Rawlings All-American in 1978.
In addition to the All-America award, Nogay and junior right fielder Josh Staniscia (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) were voted to the ABCA Rawlings First Team All-Mideast Region squad on Wednesday.
Nogay set W&J single-season records for victories (12) and innings pitched (86.1) this spring, while helping the Presidents win the Presidents’ Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles. His 12 wins are tied for the second-highest total in NCAA Division III, while his 70 strikeouts (2nd in W&J single-season history) ranked 50th nationally. He posted a 3.01 earned-run average and limited opponents to a career-low .238 batting average.
Heading into his senior season, the 2013 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year already is among the top five pitchers in W&J history in numerous career categories: ERA (2.62, 2nd), shutouts (5, 2nd), victories (22, 3rd), innings (199.2, 4th) and strikeouts (129, 5th).
A NCAA Mideast Regional All-Tournament Team choice, Nogay ranks fifth among NCAA Division III active pitchers (15th among all NCAA divisions) with five shutouts and his 22 career wins place him 21st on the active NCAA Division III list. A Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, Nogay is on the ballot for Academic All-America consideration.
Staniscia earned his second first-team, all-region award of the year after joining Nogay on the D3baseball.com team. He is a three-time First All-PAC choice and has earned first-team, all-region laurels from bothD3baseball.com and the ABCA in back-to-back years.
Staniscia started all 46 games and batted .371 as the Presidents’ No. 3 hitter. He led the team in hits (66), total bases (81) and stolen bases (11), while finishing with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage (0 errors in 88 chances).
He recorded his 13th career triple in the 9-3 PAC Championship Game victory over Thomas More which set a new school record and places him 18th among active NCAA Division III hitters.
Staniscia has played 132 games (130 starts) in the red & black uniform and owns a .375 batting average (184-for-491) with five home runs and 99 runs batted in. He also has stolen 36 bases and has only made one error in 256 chances (.996 fielding percentage).
W&J’s 33 victories this spring rank fourth in school history and the team’s third-place finish at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional was the highest among the Presidents’ four regional appearances.
