WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – More than 30 members of the West Liberty University football team kicked off October’s Hilltopper Sports Camp with a group of youngsters from nearby West Liberty Elementary School.
Nearly 50 students from Grades K-5 made the short walk down to West Family Stadium where the WLU football players helped them polish up their skills for the NFL’s annual Punt, Pass and Kick Contest.
“Our guys really enjoyed working with the elementary school students,” Hilltopper associate head coach Brad Forshey said. “In fact, they probably had just as much fun, if not more, than the kids themselves.”
The Hilltopper Sports Camps are overseen by Kathleen Wack, Assistant Professor of Physical Education and Health at West Liberty, in association with classroom teacher and wellness team leader Diana Rice and school Principal Stacy Greer. West Liberty University and West Liberty Elementary are partners in education.
Each WLU football player paired off with one or two of the elementary school students, giving the youngsters an opportunity for plenty of instruction and hands-on learning before putting those skills into action during the Punt, Pass and Kick competition.
“Working with the community is something we’ve always enjoyed doing,” Forshey added. “It’s really important to us to give back to the people who support us and show them how much we appreciate their support.”
The weekly football camps will continue at West Liberty through the month of October.
