Shawn’s Record
Overall: 163-61, .728
Last Week: 15-3, .833
Upset Special: 2-7, .222
WHEELING — The cream has risen to the top, as it always does. The contenders are marching toward what they hope is a coronation, while the pretenders have traded in their cleats for basketball shoes.
Does it get tougher to pick games from this point forward? The jury is still out, but we’re about to discover the answer.
In case you skipped over the portion at the very top — shame on you — I’m now a season-high 102 games above the .500 mark. That’s the farthest thing from bragging, because honestly I’m just as surprised as the rest of you.
Let’s get right to it and see who will live to play another week.
Ohio
Division III
Region 9
No. 3 Kenston 21, No. 2 Dover 20
UPSET SPECIAL: The Tornadoes have been living on the edge this postseason, and this time they won’t pull one out.
Division IV
Region 15
No. 2 St. Clairsville 37, No. 6 Meadowbrook 33
Have a really funny feeling about this one, and almost took the Colts to pull the upset.
Division VI
Region 23
No. 1 Fort Frye 31, No. 4 Barnesville 21
Cadets have been as good as anyone in the OVAC in recent seasons. Shamrocks give it a run, but it won’t be enough.
Division VII
Region 27
No. 7 River 28, No. 3 Shadyside 24
Tigers, who are as banged up as any team still in the field, had to hold on to beat the Pilots in the teams’ last meeting, 14-12.
West Virginia
Class AAA
No. 1 Huntington 34, No. 16 Wheeling Park 14
Patriots are better than this score indicates, but a variety of factors led to them getting an incredibly tough draw.
No. 2 Martinsburg 61, No. 15 Parkersburg South 13
There’s never a time you want to see the Bulldogs, but that is amplified even more during the postseason.
No. 3 Bridgeport 37, No. 14 Morgantown 17
Same as above goes for playing the Indians at playoff time.
No. 4 University 49, No. 13 Woodrow Wilson 7
The Hawks have the look of a legitimate title contender.
Class A
No. 1 Cameron 54 Gilmer County 6
The Titans are in for a rude welcome.
No. 4 Ritchie County 36, No. 13 Clay-Battelle 1-0
Rebels looking to make their way back to Wheeling Island Stadium.
No. 7 James Monroe 14, No. 10 Trinity 7
Mavericks are more prepared for the postseason.
No. 8 Wheeling Central 27, No. 9 Moorefield 22
The Maroon Knights will have to work for this one.
