Wheeling – What started off with an impressive beginning by Wheeling Park, now 3-2, eventually turned into a long evening for them. Running into the Steubenville’s, now 6-0, Big Red machine. What turned out to be a 69-28 victory for Steubenville was an extremely exciting game to watch on a chilling fall evening at Wheeling Island stadium.
Wheeling Park began with a very impressive opening drive marching down the field in quick order and capping it off with a short TD run by Max Wiley. Giving Park an early 7-0 lead.
However, the good times were not going to stick around long. Steubenville then answered the call by scoring the next 3 times to take a commanding 21-7 lead. Leading the way for the Big Red was senior running back Gavin Bozica. Steubenville’s running game alone was just too strong for Wheeling Park to slow down. Massing an impressive 488 total yards on the ground.
Wheeling Park absolutely did not go down without a fight by scoring a couple more times in the first half to make the halftime score 35-21 in Big Reds favor.
Both Senior quarterback Brett Phillips and standout junior wide receiver Jarrae Hawkins looked very impressive for Wheeling Park. They connected several times on the night with two of them resulting in touchdowns. Hawkins looked spectacular when he was in open space, catching nine passes for over 100 yards on the evening.
Steubenville was again just too tough on this night for Wheeling Park. Even senior quartback Phaeton Hill added nearly 200 more yards in the air connecting on just 7 passes. That combined with their strong running game made it easy for Steubenville’s offense. They were never even forced to punt on the evening, scoring on all of their possessions.
Even with the game getting a bit testy at times with multiple penalties and even an ejection, both teams represented themselves well on the night.
Park takes on Morgantown at home next week. With the Big Red returning home to take on Linsly.
