On a cool autumn evening in St. Clairsville, homecoming night was the setting for a long-time rivalry game between the Bellaire Big Reds and the St. Clairsville Red Devils. The first quarter saw both teams sticking to the ground game to control the pace of the game. Late in the quarter the Red Devils broke into the scoring column via an off tackle run by Jacob Walker.
Defenses had the spotlight for the rest of the half, with neither defense gave up a score. Coach Frye’s defense was up to the task when Bellaire switched it up from the ground to more an air it out attack. The only other score of the 1st half came from a pick six from the Big Reds’ Ray Ray Pettigrew. Making a nice catch on an Andrew Vera pass, Pettigrew weaved his way through the first wave of tacklers, the outraced the Red Devils to the endzone for the Bellaire touchdown.
Halftime saw the crowning of Rowan Flanagan as the Red Devils homecoming queen.
The Red Devils went back to the ground game to start the 3rd quarter, capping off their drive halfway through the quarter with a Walker touchdown run. Just a few minutes later following a Bellaire turnover, the Red Devils went to Walker again as he scored his 3rd touchdown of the game. When the Big Reds got the ball back on offense, they used a combination of the run and pass to drive down the field to score and make the score 19-14.
St. Clairsville extended their lead on the ensuing kickoff returning it 95 yards to give them a 26-14 lead. After the Red Devils held the Big Reds scoreless on another stalled drive, Coach Giffin used the running game to score the game’s final touchdown. Walker scored his 4th touchdown of the game to cap the scoring and leading St. Clairsville to the 33-14 victory.
Watch for Walker to be candidate for the Ovathletics.com Game Changer of the Week. The Game Changer of the Week is a new contest to be held by Ovathletics.com each week, follow us for more details.
