Wheeling, WV was one of our stops today to watch the Lady Maroon Knights of Wheeling Central take on the Lady Tigers of Shadyside. We love small gyms, small schools, and the crowds they bring. It was a warm and engaging atmosphere today at Skip Prosser Court.
The start of the game saw Shadyside come out on fire. They were up and down the court in a hurry beating the press from the Maroon Knights. Gentry Brown drained two three pointers early and added another basket. Teammate Macy Hendershot added another three pointer to give the Tigers a quick 11-0 lead over the hosting Maroon Knights.
A quick time out by Coach Roberta Olejasz seemed to calm the Maroon Knights a bit, but the Tigers kept beating the press of the Maroon Knights giving them the lead at the end of the first quarter 13-10.
The second quarter is where you started to see a swing in momentum. A couple of coaching adjustments by the Maroon Knights coaching staff had that press get more effective and start to begin to force some turnovers that the offense capitalized on.
Wheeling Central’s Brooke Edge seemed to be unstoppable on the day making plays on both side of the ball every chance she had. Edge finished the day with a total of 15 points, but the plays she made on defense and distributing the ball really set her apart today on the court.
One of the beneficiaries of Brooke’s play was Lily Vogrin Who always seemed to be in the right place at the right time. She led the Maroon Knights with 16 points on the day, but also came up big on defense as well. Draining three threes on the day you could just tell Lily was dialed in.
Wheeling Central took over the lead in the second quarter and held onto it until the half taking the lead into the locker room 25-19.
The third quarter saw just as much excitement as the first half provided with an intense battle under the hoop. Wheeling Central’s Keiera Wilkinson and Shadyside’s Gentry Brown seemed to go toe to toe for every rebound and scrapped for everything they could get.
The third quarter is where Wheeling Central’s Brooks Edge really seemed to take over the game, scoring three threes and another bucket. Not to mention assist after assist and steal after steal. This helped propel the Maroon Knights to a 46-34 lead at the end of the third.
Shadyside kept up the fight in the second half with Rylie Fulton sinking a couple three pointers and playing some tough defense. Rylie finished the day with a total of 10 points. Gentry Brown did her very best to help carry the Tigers on this day finishing with a total of 22 points, but Wheeling Central proved to just be too much for the Tigers and earning a 58-47 victory.
Wheeling Central’s Keiera Wilkinson also added 8 points in the second half to help the Maroon Knights control the game. As well as Wheeling Central’s lily Vogrin who went 4 for 4 on the free throw line late.
This was a well earned victory today for the Knights, as the Tigers came to play.
