If you have followed Ohio Valley Athletics much this season, be it on our site here or on our streamcast, you know how much we have talked about Robert Shockey. You will also know how much we believe that this young man is the real deal! We just had to do a bio on him. Robert and several others are absolutely in the running for Ohio Valley Athletics Athlete of the Year award.
Robert Shockey a junior from Parkersburg South is a standout on both the matts and on the gridiron. Wrestling at 190 lbs., Shockey just secured another Championship Title at the 2023 OVACs. This Saturday, on Feb. 18th at Cabell Midland High school this #4 wearing quarterback will be wrestling at the Region IV match to secure himself a spot to wrestle for the state championship.
Shockey a stellar student with an impeccable attendance record knows and understands what hard work is. Maintaining a 4.0 since Kindergarten and having less than 15 absences in all of his school years reflects his success both in the classroom, on the matts, and on the football field. He has been named to the Academic All-State team by WV Mat every year he’s been eligible to receive it.
Coming off an incredible football season Shockey is focused on winning a state championship title for 190 lb. bracket. Considering all of his wrestling accomplishments this championship appears to already be in his grasp. Shockey’s love for wrestling and football began at a young age. It was obvious from the start that he was a natural and an extremely talented athlete.

Holding all these titles has led to WVU wrestling program inviting Shockey down for an impressive two-day visit. Other universities that have invited Shockey for recruiting visits include: Princeton, Marshall, Kent, Bluefield, the University of Richmond, and EKU.
Tough on the mats and smart on the playing field Shockey equally holds numerous football records and stats. Playing since he was 6 years of age Shockey knew that he had something special. He started his career on the gridiron as running back but found his true calling as a quarterback. The highlights are endless of this young man. Shockey is second on the State Stat Leaders 2022 Leaderboard-Player Passing yards behind only; Wheeling Parks, Brett Phillips with 3105 yards. With a year left of passing ahead of him, Shockey with his 5,061 passing yards and 1,986 rushing yards, could surpass those ahead of him. Shockey will be attending the Rivals Wilson QBX camp in Cincinnati this April hoping to showcase his measurable athleticism. Shockey is making his goal of playing football Division 1 more attainable with every pass he throws.

Shockey’s 7,021 yards ranked 2nd all time in WV AAA history. This places Shockey on pace to be the second person in WV AAA history to have over 10,000 career total yards and is also on pace to be the 2nd person to have over 100 career touchdowns. His 3,400 total yards through 10 games ranks 2nd of all time in WV AAA history only 2nd to JR House (1998) season.
Although Shockey has always been a natural all of his accolades did not come with out adversity. When Shockey was a Freshman he and his family made the decision for Shockey to attend high school at Parkersburg South. Robert’s mother received a job in Wood county as an educator. Making Shockey choose the difficult decision to leave his hometown friends in Ravenswood and decided that South a much bigger school and would not only allow him to gain more exposure as an athlete but also broaden his horizons to tougher competition and more academic opportunities. When asked what skills he would like to improve on Shockey states, “As a quarterback to improve his rapid cognition ability to go through his progressions more efficiently.” Shockey will undoubtedly fine tune his already polished skills to possibly lead Parkersburg South to a state championship. Shockey’s favorite football memory is when Parkersburg South beat Hurricane 58-27 in the AAA semi-final playoff game. This particular game set Parkersburg South Records of the most points scored and the point differential. Also, winning the cross town showdown verse PHS 55-7, the largest margin of victory in the series history.
Shockey will be around for another year. The sports world can not wait to see what more this young man can accomplish both on the mats and on the gridiron.
