Over the weekend we had a pair of West Virginia Regional wrestling tournaments to determine what local wrestlers moved onto states. The top four winners in the regionals advance to the state Championships in Huntington March 2nd – 4th. Preston hosted the AAA and Fairmont hosted the A/AA on Saturday.
We had several local wrestlers perform at very high levels to earn their way to states in March. We had the wrestling powerhouse schools as usual making waves, but there are some schools that are really making moves in wrestling lately and will be represented down state as well.
University leads the way sending a whopping 13 wrestlers to represent their school. This roster is loaded full of spectacular wrestlers, but watching some of these young men before we are looking forward to seeing a couple of our favorites in Luca Felix (175) and Brock Kehler (215).
Wheeling Park is sending 10 wrestlers to states. They had several place first in regionals this past weekend: Jack Lowe (132), Adam Carman (138), Bradyn Lucas (144), Quinton Velas (150), and Jameson Maynard (165).
John Marshall will be adding 9 wrestlers to the state tournament. Zander Ward (113) finished with an impressive 1st place finish in regionals. Ethan Cook (126), Waylon Wyckoff (144), Ryan Ward (150) all had second-place finishes. Kaden Harding (120), Klypsan Wallace (165) and Maverick Lemasters (175) all had third place finishes.
Oak Glen will be sending 8 wrestlers to states. Logan Davis (113), Hayden Lamb (132), and Braxton Dlugopolski (165) all had first places finishes to advance. Oak Glen continues to be one of the premier wrestling programs in the Valley.
Cameron had Adam Angel (175) place first over the weekend. Slaton Pettit (126), Payton Neely (138) and Ashton Hoge (144) all had second place finishes to punch their tickets to states. They are 3 of the 5 wrestlers that will be breathing fire to represent the Dragons this March in states.
Wheeling Central is one team we want to mention because watching them through the year and seeing how they are building their program we are nothing short of impressed. Central will be sending two “Freshmen” wrestlers to Huntington to represent them in states. Isaac Martin (215) had a specular day on Saturday earning himself a first-place finish. Isaac really has propelled himself onto the scene this year and we’re really looking forward to seeing what he does in states. Combine Isaac’s first place finish with teammates Wyatt Brady’s (165) third place finish and you get the two wrestlers that will represent Wheeling Central this March in states.
The complete list of local wrestlers that will advance to states in West Virginia is below. We want to wish all of the wrestlers the best of luck in states. Well done gentleman! There are also links to the state tournament brackets at the very bottom.
A little update for the article as we forgot our friends at Parkersburg South because they wrestled in Region 4 held at Barboursville MS. We sincerely did not mean to leave you all out, but you’re the only school we cover that was in Region 4.
There is good reason why we wanted to update the article, because South loves their wrestling and do they ever get it done. Parkersburg South will be sending an eye-popping 13 wrestlers to states, matching University who we mentioned earlier in this article.
Leading the way for South was Corbin Phillips (106), Brady Roberts (126), Makiya Powell (150), Kyle Wheeler (157), gage Wright (175), Ayden Morris (215), and Brycen Arthur (285) all with first place finishes in regionals. Add in a couple second place finishes from both Mackiah Claudio (113) and Roberty Shockey (190). There were a few more third place finishes for the Patriots to round out their school’s representatives in states with Ryan Martin (138), Nathan Murphy (144), and Trent Bush (165).
