One day after Parkersburg hosted John Marshall High School to kick off their 2023 baseball season, winning that outing 5-1, they travel to West Liberty. This is where the host team; the Wheeling Park Patriots opened their season. Did Park ever open their season is style.
One, you have the fantastic facilities at West Liberty and the college atmosphere. Two, you have senior standout and righthander pitcher, Gian DeGenova, No Hit the Big Reds. DeGenova made quick work of the Big Reds striking out 6 and only allowing two walks on the day in six innings.
The game only went six innings due to the mercy rule in West Virginia, where if a team is up 10 after six innings the game is over. This was in part by, you guessed it, DeGenova himself. He even knocked in a couple runs to help his cause. Hitting both a single and a double, he earned himself a couple of RBIs and he managed to score two runs himself, in addition to the no hitter.
Side note, this kid is just as good on the ice too. I remember him at the West Virginia State Hockey tournament just this past season where he helped Wheeling Park reach the finals. Another note on DeGenova, he is a signed Wheeling University commit.
This wasn’t just the DeGenova show however. Nate Bittinger and Braydon Kupsky scored a pair of runs each. Ryan Conrad (verbal Potomac State commit) knocked in a couple runs and earned one for himself on the day as well. All this helped the Patriots secure a 10-0 win over the Big Reds.
Jared Marsch, Grant Simons, Quinn Jamison, and Tino Nardone all added a run each too. This made for an impressive opener for the Patriots. We cannot wait to see where they go from here.
We had to give a shout out to Mr. DeGenova on the No-No though. Great job young man!
