KUTZTOWN, Pa. – A strong second-half performance lifted Kutztown (Pa.) to a 249.28-246.05 upset of No. 15-ranked West Liberty here Saturday afternoon in a non-conference Acrobatics & Tumbling match at Keystone Arena.
Coach Kelsey Kyle‘s Hilltoppers (3-5) got off to a good start, sweeping all three first-half events from the Golden Bears (3-3) to take a three-point lead into intermission.
West Liberty posted a 34.25-33.20 win in the Compulsory Event and followed that up with a 27.20-25.40 victory in the Acro Event before eking out a 28.40-28.35 decision in the Pyramid Event to build an 89.95-86.95 halftime lead.
Kutztown began chipping away at that deficit when action resumed, winning the Toss Event by a 24.70-24.35 margin. The Golden Bears followed that up with another narrow decision, squeezing out a 49.250-48.900 win in the Tumbling Event, setting the stage for the Team Event to determine the winner.
Despite dropping the Toss and Tumbling Events, West Liberty still carried a 163.10-160.90 lead into the Team Event but it wasn’t enough as Kutztown won the Team Event by a score of 88.38-82.95 to win the match.
The Hilltoppers will look to bounce back on April 2 when they return to the friendly confines of the ASRC to host a tri-match with Mountain East Conference rivals Davis & Elkins and Fairmont State.
