Buckhannon, WV, February 14, 2011—During the final moments of Monday evening’s basketball game, last second heroics by Ben Siefert extended play as the Cardinals fell by two points, 87-85, in overtime to West Virginia Wesleyan College.
Down three and six seconds showing on the clock, The Cardinals pushed the ball up the floor when Siefert launched a shot from beyond the arc, touching nothing but the bottom of the net to send the game into overtime as time expired, 78-78.
In the overtime period, Marquis Moore recorded the Cardinals first four points, resulting in an 82-79 advantage. With 1:53 remaining Wesleyan recaptured the lead with a rim-rocking dunk by Neven Zeravica who also added two free throws on the next trip down the floor, giving the Bobcats a 85-82 lead with 49 seconds left.
Steve Catich responded, draining a clutch three-pointer and knotting the game at 85 apiece. On the ensuing possesion, Brad DuPont was called for a reaching foul, sending WVWC’s Reggie Chambers to the line. Chambers knocked down both free throws, and Siefert’s attempt for the game-winner fell to the floor.
To open the game, Wheeling Jesuit was awarded two foul shots and the ball after Chambers received a technical foul for dunking in pregame warm-ups. Before time began to roll off the clock, Catich sank the pair free throws to give the Cardinals a two-point advantage.
During the first 11 minutes of the half, the two teams battled back-and-forth with two lead changes and two ties before the Bobcats increased the lead to nine with six unanswered points.
