Morgantown – The West Virginia University baseball team defeated Canisius, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at Hawley Field to complete a doubleheader sweep of the Golden Griffins.
The Mountaineers (12-8) scored four runs on six hits with two errors, while Canisius (5-12) had three runs on five hits with one error.
West Virginia’s offensive attack was led by outfielder Brady Wilson and first baseman Ryan McBroom. Wilson went 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs, while McBroom was 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Getting the win for the Mountaineers was Andy Berry (3-1) who threw a complete game and allowed two earned runs on five hits.
After Canisius scored one run in the top of the second, the Mountaineers were able to take a 3-1 lead after scoring three runs on four hits in the bottom half of the inning. Designated hitter Jeremy Gum opened the inning with a single through the right side. After a sacrifice bunt by outfielder Chris Rasky, McBroom singled up the middle to drive Gum in from second base. Outfielder Mark Dvoroznak followed suit with a single to left and was followed by Wilson’s triple to deep right center field that scored McBroom and Dvoroznak.
The Mountaineers scored their fourth and final run in the bottom of the third when second baseman Dan DiBartolomeo was driven home by a sacrifice fly to center field by McBroom.
Drew Pettit went 3-for-3 for the Golden Griffins with one RBI, while Will Chomicki and Brian Burton each recorded one RBI.
Chris Cox took the loss for the Golden Griffins, throwing a complete game and giving up three earned runs on six hits.
The Mountaineers and Canisius will be back in action tomorrow at noon at Hawley Field for the series finale.
