The Penguins knew the Lightning would come out hard in Game 2 to avoid a 2-0 series deficit. The Lightning did just that, scoring the opening goal two minutes after puck drop en route to a 5-1 win at CONSOL Energy Center to even the series at 1-1.
The Penguins wanted to play physical, but avoid taking penalties to keep the Lightning power play – the best in the Eastern Conference – on the bench. However, Pittsburgh was whistled for six penalties and the Bolts took advantage, scoring two power-play goals.
The Penguins had trouble getting some rhythm in the opening period – a combination of penalties and four-on-four play didn’t allow the team to get anything going. Tampa Bay capitalized on two odd-man rushes and a power play to jump out to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.
Pittsburgh finally got to their game in the second period, completely dominating play. However, they only managed to squeeze one puck behind Lightning goalie Dwayne Roloson to make it a 3-1 game. Unfortunately for the Penguins, Martin St. Louis scored a power-play goal with just 14 seconds left to up the Bolts’ lead to 4-1.
The series shifts to Tampa Bay tied at 1-1. The Penguins were one of the best road teams in the NHL this season. They’ll bring that mentality next Monday in Game 3 at St. Pete Times Forum.
