For what would ultimately be the final week of football for many teams in the Ohio Valley Friday night, we saw some incredible games. We had 8 teams produce more than 30 points respectively, and we saw 6 games where the winning team won by the margin of only 1 score or less, with 2 teams earning a win by only a single point.
On the Ohio side we had 5 playoff games feature OVAC teams with Monroe Central, Harrison Central, Caldwell, Steubenville, and Buckeye Local all lining up to play in the first round of the OSHAA playoffs. Unfortunately, only Steubenville will advance to the 2nd round of post season play as Harrison Central, Buckeye Local, Caldwell, and Monroe Central all lost in hard fought games.
Saturday night, the OVAC will have Bridgeport and Martins Ferry in playoff action as they are each hosting their first round games.
In West Virginia, this is the last weekend of regular season play. The Ohio Valley hosts the top teams in each class, and they all had a chance to cap perfect records to their seasons tonight and lock the top seeds in their respective divisions.
Mission accomplished.
Brooke overcame a struggle with Musselman to preserve their perfect record at 10-0. This is the first time the Brooke Bruins have posted an undefeated season in 19 years, dating back to 1991. Brooke will enter the West Virginia playoffs as the AAA #1 seed.
On Senior Night, Wheeling Central came back from trailing 3 touchdowns to earn a 1 point victory over Linsly. While Linsly does not qualify for post season play, Wheeling Central needed a victory to keep their hopes alive of hosting a 1st round playoff game.
Weirton Madonna found theirself in trouble early with Clay-Battelle when they gave up an early safety, but The Dons regained their composure to capture their second consecutive undefeated season. Madonna extended their regular season winning steak to 25 games. Madonna will enter the West Virginia playoffs as the #1 single A seed.
Magnolia defeated instate rival Grafton to preserve their 10-0 perfect season, thus giving the OVAC an undefeated team in each of the WVSAAC’s divisions. Magnolia will enter the West Virginia playoffs as the #1 AA seed.
