Wheeling, WV, May 4, 2011—On Friday, May 6th through Sunday, May 8th, Wheeling Jesuit University women’s golfer, Whitney Young, will compete at the 25th PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship presented by Brown Capital Management.
The tournament will be held at the PGA Golf Club, Ryder and Wanamaker Courses, in Port St. Lucie, Fla. and will feature a women’s division consisting of five colleges and universities along with 16 individual participants.
Young suffered what was thought to be a season ending injury in late November in an attempt to play basketball for the Lady Cardinals. During preseason workouts, the sophomore from Wilkinsburg, PA tore her Achilles tendon, but through hardwork and perseverance bounced back to compete with the team this spring.
In all three spring tournaments, Young finished in the Top 10 while improving her scoring average from 85.15 to 83.33. The Linsly School standout finished seventh in her first tournament of the spring with scores of 90 and 75 while lifting the Lady Cards to a third place finish at Oxbow Golf Club in Belpre, OH.
She followed with a second place finish and a tournament championship in the second spring event at West Virginia Wesleyan’s Johnny D. Barbour Invitational at Stonewall Jackson Resort with a two-day total of 170 (83, 87) – Teammate, Julie Hirauk finished first with a total score of169..
The Lady Cardinals went on to capture the WVIAC’s Southern Regional crown as Young finished sixth, shooting an 85 and 80.
