The Penguins took on the New York Islanders on Tuesday night. It was considerably the best game of the season—especially for Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, who each scored multiple goals in the same game for the first time in their careers.
The first period saw four penalties—two for each of the teams. The only goal of the period was scored by Crosby. His 31st goal of the season went in the net when Crosby took a shot on Roloson after Mark Eaton’s shot from the point hit traffic on its way to the net. Bill Guerin also assisted on the goal.
It was the second period that saw the most goals of the game. It started just over three minutes in when Evgeni Malkin put the puck in the net for his 15th of the season while the Pens were on a 5-on-3 power play. Sergei Gonchar and Sidney Crosby assisted on the goal that gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead.
Then, surprisingly, the Pens—who were the second worst team on the power play—scored another goal with a man advantage a little while later. Crosby fed Bill Guerin a nice backhand pass and Guerin stuffed it in the net. Gonchar also recorded an assist on the goal.
The Islanders finally scored their first goal of the night. A powerful slap shot from Andy Sutton soared past Penguin goalie Brent Johnson. Jack Hillen and Doug Weight assisted.
But the Penguins answered shortly thereafter when Crosby took advantage of a loose puck in front of the net, recording his 32nd goal of the night. Dupuis and Letang assisted as the Penguins took a 4-1 lead.
Only 25 seconds later, though, Islander Freddy Meyer—assisted by Blake Comeau and Rob Schremp—put a slap shot past Johnson. The score was 4-2 at the end of two.
Less than a minute into the third period, Trent Hunter scored for the Islanders when Tyler Kennedy and Gonchar experienced some miscommunication on the ice that led to a turnover and the eventual goal.
