PITTSBURGH — The Pirates will send left-hander Brian Burres to the mound on Wednesday in place of Jeff Karstens, who will miss his second straight start, Manager Clint Hurdle said on Monday.
Burres allowed one run on five hits over 5.1 innings on Friday against the Chicago Cubs. He walked one and struck out five in his 2011 debut with the Pirates.
Karstens has been dealing with arm soreness and fatigue recently. He has posted a 9-8 record with a 3.32 ERA in 28 games (24 starts) this season with the Pirates.
