PITTSBURGH — It’s been an exciting two days for left-handed pitcher Jeff Locke. After getting called up to the Major Leagues on Tuesday, Locke was told by the Pirates manager Clint Hurdle that he will make his big league debut on Saturday in place of right-hander Charlie Morton.
“I’m very excited,” Locke said. “Just looking forward to going out there and trying to showcase my talent. Being able to pitch in front of Clint, a guy that’s as prestigious as him, it’s different from spring training. It’s a lot different now. This is a big honor and I’m very excited.”
Locke, 23, started the 2011 season with the Double-A Curve where he posted a 4.03 ERA in 22 starts. After getting promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis on August 12th, Locke excelled posting a 2.22 ERA in five starts.
Locke made adjustments with Indy, which are proving to pay off.
“I worked very hard on getting on my backside, getting on my mechanics, throwing the ball downhill,” Locke said. “I guess all of it was preparation for what’s ahead, for what’s in the future. The sooner you can click on mechanical issues, the sooner you can hone in on your craft.”
With his big debut just three days away, the Pirates No. 8 overall prospect is feeling pretty good.
“Everything feels really good right now. Especially being up here, your arm couldn’t feel any better.”
