The Buckeyes have two games under their belts and for the most part, it’s hard to make many conclusions about them. Sure, they are young and seem to bounce back well from adversity. However, last Saturday’s performance brought a flurry of questions into focus and this week’s opponent could give the Buckeyes their first lost of the season.
While this year’s edition of Miami vs. Ohio State may not hold the same national cache as their previous meeting, this game may be more important. The programs are young, both are coming off difficult off-seasons and each is hungry to win a big game. It makes for an interesting storyline, as this game could be the undoing or the catalyst for the season for either team.
For Ohio State, this game provides many challenges.
The Buckeyes are a young team, on the road for the first time against an opponent that is not only eager for a win but wants payback for last year. One of the most important aspects of the game will be Ohio State’s ability or lack there of to adapt to different surroundings.
Similarly, the Buckeyes cannot allow the hype of the game to get to them. Playing under the lights on the national stage is huge and it’s important the players keep focus on what is important. Besides, their opponent warrants their attention.
Miami may not be a national superpower, but they do possess talent. They are quick on both sides of the ball and can make big plays in the blink of an eye.
One thing is certain; the Hurricanes will try to expose the Buckeyes’ weaknesses.
On offense, Miami may employ a fast tempo game, which features a mixture short passes, draws, and deep looks to confuse Ohio State. The Buckeyes struggled last week against this game plan, and the Hurricanes have the personnel to execute this scheme better than Toledo.
Defensively, expect the Hurricanes to force the Buckeyes to beat them through the air. Ohio State’s offensive line had trouble with Toledo, as often times the Rockets stacked the box and got to the ball carrier before he could cross the line of scrimmage. Expect Miami to do the same. They know if Ohio State cannot get their ground game going they are one dimensional, and at this point, it’s too early to tell whether Joe Bauserman can make the plays necessary to win.
Ultimately, special teams can win or lose this game for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State’s coverage teams have to improve. All it takes in a game like this is one big return, which could change the tide of the game. Moreover, can the Buckeyes make a field goal? If the game comes down to field position a field goal could be the difference.
In the end, there are many factors weighing against the Buckeyes. Ohio State has the talent to beat Miami but they have to play mistake free in all three areas of the game. The odds are against them winning but then again, Ohio State has a history of proving doubters wrong.
