The Pirates No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 draft, right-hander Gerrit Cole, will pitch in the Arizona Fall League for the Mesa Solar Sox.
Since signing with the Pirates, Cole has been throwing and working out at Pirate City in Bradenton, Fla., and will participate in the Fall Instructional League for the first two weeks before departing for Arizona.
Cole will join left-hander Nathan Baker, right-handers Michael Colla, Phil Irwin, Infielders Jarek Cunningham, Brock Holt and Outfielder Robbie Grossman as the Pirates representatives in the Fall League.
The Solar Sox will have top prospects from the Pirates, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins and Baltimore Orioles. The season will kick off on October 4th and run until November 17th.
In 16 games as a junior with UCLA this past season, the 20-year-old went 6-8 with a 3.31 ERA, four complete games, a shutout and 119 strikeouts.
Over his three years at UCLA, Cole ranked second in school history in strikeouts (376), third in starts (49) and fifth in innings pitched (322.1).
