The buzz around Morgantown and the college football world on Tuesday was the reports that West Virginia has accepted an invite to join the Big 12. ESPN’s own Joe Schad broke the story earlier this afternoon.
“The Big 12 has told West Virginia it will be accepted into the conference pending formal approval, which could happen as soon as later Tuesday, a Big 12 source said,” according to Schad.
According to initial reports, West Virginia was to replace Missouri as they are reportedly headed to the SEC after legal concerns are dealt with. If West Virginia does in fact accept the invitation to the Big 12 as it looks like they will, the Big East requires a 27 month wait to depart.
However, despite the reports, Michael Fragale, the assistant athletic director, issued the following statement Tuesday night to the media:
“Contrary to media reports, there is no press conference scheduled for Wednesday concerning WVU’s athletic conference affiliation. There are no further comments at this time.”
