Pirates pitching prospect Gerrit Cole and outfielder prospect Robbie Grossman were named to the Arizona Fall League Rising Stars game on Tuesday.
Cole, who was the Pirates first round pick (1st overall) in the 2011 draft, will get the nod to start for the East Division All-Stars. They will face the West Division in Saturday’s AFL Rising Stars Game. Starting against Cole is Seattle Mariners pitching prospect Danny Hultzen, who was taken 2nd overall in this years draft.
Cole is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in four starts (12.0 innings). He has walked three and struck out 12. Since making his AFL debut on October 14th, Cole tossed 8.2 innings without allowing an earned run. It was snapped after allowing a solo-home run on Monday –the only run allowed by Cole in his 4th start of the season.
Joining Cole on Saturday is Grossman, who has had an outstanding season in the AFL so far. Grossman currently ranks third in the Arizona Fall League in average (.385), first in hits (35), tied in first in home runs (6), third in RBI (20), first in walks (19), fourth in OBP (.486), and third in OPS (1.124).
The game will be played at 8:10 PM ET and will broadcast live on MLB Network and MLB.com.
