PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced the signing of minor league free agent first baseman Nick Evans. The deal also includes an invitation to spring training.
Evans, 25, split the 2011 season between Triple-A Buffalo and in the Majors with the New York Mets. He made 45 appearances at first base, nine in the outfield and two at third base with the Mets while batting .256 with 10 doubles, four home runs and 25 RBI in 59 total games.
Evans was selected by New York in the fifth round of the 2004 Draft. Evans was an Eastern League All-Star in 2008 and was selected as the organization’s Co-Player of the Year after hitting .311 with 14 homers and 53 RBI in 75 games with Binghamton.
Evans has spent parts of the last four seasons in the Major Leagues with the Mets and has produced a .256 batting average, 28 doubles, eight home runs and 46 RBI in 159 games.
The Pirates have now signed 11 minor league free agents this offseason.
