PRINCETON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women’s tennis team was in the spotlight Friday when the West Virginia Conference coaches announced the results of their 2009-10 All-WVIAC balloting.
Hilltopper junior standout Marina Quintana was honored as the WVIAC Player of the Year while senior veteran Marissa Fansler was a first-team All-WVIAC choice.
West Virginia Wesleyan’s Anastasiya Scherbakova was the WVIAC Freshman of the Year while Charleston’s Shari Reed was named Coach of the Year for the second straight season.
Quintana’s Player of the Year selection was a no-brainer for the coaches as the junior from Las Palmas, Spain has been one of the most dominant players in the region throughout the fall.
She is the sixth West Liberty women’s tennis player to be named WVIAC Player of the Year since the award was instituted in 1987. Those six Hilltopper standouts have combined to win 11 of the 23 annual awards.
Now a three-time first-team All-WVIAC honoree, Quintana didn’t lose a single set in sweeping her way to a perfect 9-0 record at No. 1 singles in West Virginia Conference competition. She carried a perfect 14-0 overall record on the season into this weekend’s WVIAC championship tournament.
Fansler carved out a niche in the conference record books as a rare four-time first-team All-WVIAC selection. The senior from Parkersburg, W.Va. was a rock for Coach Heather Gallagher’s Hilltoppers this fall.
Along with compiling an outstanding 7-2 record at No. 2 singles in WVIAC action, Fansler teamed with Quintana to form one of the region’s top doubles tandems. Fansler and Quintana were unbeaten at No. 1 doubles in WVIAC play.
The West Liberty women were scheduled to take on Shepherd Friday morning in the quarterfinals of the WVIAC tournament in Charleston.
