It’s as if the West Virginia Mountaineers never left Miami after defeating Clemson 70-33 in the Orange Bowl. 11 of the 26 recruits of the Mountaineers are from the South Florida region, the most ever for a West Virginia class. Coach Dana Holgorsen is very happy with his 2012 recruitment class.
“(Assistant coach) Robert Gillespie did a great job of recruiting down in South Florida and (assistant) Shannon Dawson took over some of the Central Florida kids and did a good job prior to the bowl game and after the bowl game,” said Holgorsen. “West Virginia has always done well in Florida.”
The Mountaineers were able to land receiver Deontay McManus, who was being heavily recruited by Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, Miami, Oregon and many other prestigious programs. McManus is considered the best prospect of the class, being a four-star recruit by both Rivals and Scout. McManus led Dunbar High to back-to-back state titles after catching 40 passes for 590 yards and six touchdowns as a senior. McManus, a physical, 6-foot-1, 209-pounder, was a two-time consensus all-state selection.
