The Mesa Solar Sox (16-17) went 2-3 in their sixth week of the of Arizona Fall League. The Solar Sox trail Salt River (21-13), who have clinched the AFL East advancing to the playoffs to face Surprise on Saturday, November 19th. The regular season of the Fall League ends on Thursday.
Here is a break down on how the Pirates prospects have done this week:
- Left-hander Nathan Baker made one appearance from the bullpen this week. In his lone outing, Baker had his worst outing of the Fall League giving up five runs on four hits over 2.0 innings with two walks and a strikeout. Baker allowed one run on two hits in his first inning of work. In his second inning, Baker allowed a leadoff single and a walk. With two outs, Baker walked his second batter of the inning and then gave up a grand slam.
So far this season, Baker has is 1-1 with a 10.13 ERA (13.1 innings) with 11 walks and 14 strikeouts.
- Right-hander Gerrit Cole, the Pirates No.1 overall selection in the 2011 draft, made his final start of the season on Saturday. In his fifth start, Cole allowed one run on two hits over 3.0 innings with one walk and four strikeouts. The lone run Cole allowed came in the 2nd inning after issuing a leadoff walk to Anthony Gose, who swiped second, and scored on a RBI groundout.
In five starts this season, Cole went 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA (15.0 innings) with four walks and 16 strikeouts.
- Right-hander Mike Colla made one appearance out of the bullpen this week for Mesa. On Thursday, Colla tossed a perfect inning of relief to pick up his second save of the season.
In 10 appearances (14.0 innings), Colla has a 4.50 ERA with 10 walks and nine strikeouts.
- Right-hander Jeff Inman made two appearances in relief this week for Mesa. On Tuesday, Inman tossed a perfect inning of relief. On Friday, Inman allowed one run on one two hits over 1.0 of relief.
In seven appearances (6.1 innings), Inman has allowed six runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
- Infielder Jarek Cunningham went 2-for-11 (.181 avg) with one RBI and a walk in three games this week. Overall this season, Cunningham is batting .235 in 22 games with Mesa.
- Infielder Brock Holt played in two games this week where he went 3-for-7 (.429 avg) with a run, RBI, walk and a stolen bases. In seven games, Holt is batting .261.
- Outfielder Robbie Grossman’s solid AFL season came to an end early as he will undergo season-ending surgery. Grossman fractured his hamate bone (hand) and will undergo surgery this week (You can read the story here). Grossman finished with a .375 avg, 20 runs, five doubles, seven home runs, 22 RBI, 20 walks and six stolen bases over 26 games.
