The (6-0) Caldwell Redskins welcomed undefeated Barnesville to Noble County in a “Somebody’s ‘0’ Has Got To Go” game at Howard J Devol Memorial Field. It was homecoming for the Redskins who were 13-23-1 all time against the Rocks. The rivalry took a hiatus from 2019 to this season, but was renewed. Barnesville had won two straight, outscoring Caldwell 76-28 in those two games. Caldwell’s last win against Barnesville came back in 2014.
After the opening festivities, Caldwell took the opening kickoff to their own 30 yard line. The Redskins would go three and out, but on the first play for the Shamrocks, Taison Starr rumbled for nine yards but right at the end of the run, the ball popped out. Caldwell took over on the Barnesville 42 yard line. Three plays later, Casey Carpenter stepped in front of a Cale Bender pass and took it down to the Barnesville 39 yard line. Three plays later Duker Castello broke behind the Caldwell secondary and Carpenter dropped a dime to Castello for the first score of the game and Barnesville took a 7-0 lead with 8:10 to go in the first quarter. After a Caldwell punt Barnesville took over on their own 22 yard line. Seven plays later Carpenter found Castello a second time, this time from 53 yards out to make it 14-0 Barnesville after one.
Caldwell got some momentum going in the second quarter but Dylan Wheeler fumbled the ball at the 16 yard line and Barnesville took over. It only took the Shamrocks six plays to march back down the field and Taison Starr found the endzone from two yards out to extend the Shamrocks lead to 20-0. The next Caldwell drive was ended by another Casey Carpenter interception, Carpenter’s second of the night. Barnesville took advantage of the short field and drove 24 yards to make it 27-0 for the visitors. Casey Carpenter threw his third touchdown of the night this time to Cam Carpenter. After a Redskins three and out, the Shamrocks only needed three plays to extend their lead to 34-0 after Casey Carpenter found Bradey McIntire from 60 yards out. Caldwell was forced into another three and out on the ensuing drive and Barnesville took over on their own 37 yard line. After a five play 63 yard drive Casey Carpenter threw his fifth touchdown pass of the night. Luke Detling was on the receiving end of that pass and Barnesville took at 41-0 lead into the half. At halftime Devin McKee was crowned Homecoming King while Katie Franklin was crowned Caldwell’s 2023 Homecoming Queen.
Caldwell would tack on a late score in the fourth quarter as Ethan Crock took a Izic Cool pass from six yards out. The Shamrocks dominated from start to finish in this one. Shamrock quarterback Casey Carpenter threw for 294 yards and five touchdowns in only two quarters of play. Duker Castello finished the night with three receptions for 137 yards and two touchdown scores of 46 yards and 53 yards. Luke Detling added 73 yards on four receptions while Bradey McIntire hauled in one reception for a 60 yard score. Cam Carpenter collected 22 yards on 5 receptions and Eli Messenger added two more receptions for 37 yards. Cole Francis played the entire second half for Barnesville at quarterback and went five for eight and 46 yards through the air. Taison Starr added 71 yards of total offense in just one half of play. Casey Carpenter was just as impressive on defense, picking off two Cale Bender passes. Barnesville also held Caldwell to only 163 yards of total offense.
The Redskins will look to rebound against (5-2) Fort Frye next week. The Cadets fell to Point Pleasant 20-13 in Week 7. Barnesville improves to 7-0 on the season and will await Monroe Central next week! Monroe Central is coming off a come from behind victory over Shenandoah 34-26.
