LATROBE, Pa. – The Bethany College baseball team was limited to one run and seven hits in dropping a doubleheader at Saint Vincent Monday by scores of 4-0 and 4-1.
Game one saw the Bearcats post one run in the first inning on an RBI single by Mike Hustava and then in the third, Hustava blasted a three-run homer for a 4-0 SVC lead. The Bison’s best chances to score came in the second and sixth innings when a pair of singles put two runners on, but a fielder’s choice ended the second inning and a strike out thwarted the opportunity in the sixth.
Bethany was limited to just five singles in the loss, as Jeff Bugajski struck out seven in throwing the complete game. Bison senior Zac Grayson (McKeesport, Pa./South Allegheny) started and threw five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out one and not walking a batter.
Saint Vincent jumped out to a quick lead in the nightcap as well, plating three runs, one of which came off a Bison error, to take a 3-0 lead. The home team tacked on another tally in the fifth to make it 4-0.
As tough as Bugajski was on the Bison bats in the opener, game two’s starter was even better. Southpaw Max Henry did not allow a hit through the first five innings and struck out 10. Bethany finally managed a hit to lead off the sixth with an Evans single, which was followed by a single from senior CF Tyler Dillinger (McKeesport, Pa.) and Bethany’s first run would come in on a sacrifice fly from junior catcher T.J. Zarewicz (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills).
Trailing 4-1 going into the seventh, the Bison were unable to mount a threat against Henry, who struck out the final three batters to finish with 13 Ks. The two hits by BC in the sixth were the only ones they managed in the game and they also had two reach on walks.
Suffering the tough luck loss for Bethany was junior Zak Kozlowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin). He threw six innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits and struck out two with one walk.
The Bison will be back on the diamond Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader against Franciscan. First pitch at Bethany Park is scheduled for 2 p.m.
