BETHANY, W.Va. – The Bethany College men’s tennis team won two of three in doubles and five of six in singles to coast to a 7-2 victory over Washington & Jefferson Thursday to improve to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in the PAC.
With their third win, the Bison surpassed their victory total from last year and have now won the most matches by a BC team since going 5-6 in 2007.
Bethany’s first win over W&J began with a pair of big wins in doubles. Senior Dustin Opalka (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview) and junior Jared Patrick (McMechen, W.Va./John Marshall) won by an 8-3 count at #1, which was the same score that freshman James Peterson (Colorado Springs, Col./Cheyenne Mountain) and junior Ryan Rokisky (Weirton, W.Va./Weirton Madonna) were victorious by at #2 doubles.
Singles action was also controlled by the Bison, who secured four of their five wins in straight sets. Opalka (6-1, 6-1 at #1), Peterson (6-0, 6-2 at #2), Patrick (6-2, 6-2 at #3) and Rokisky (6-1, 6-2 at #5) all picked up strong victories. The tightest match was at #4, where freshman Dustin Maiolo (Stevensville, Ontario/St. Michael) outlasted Christopher Fadil of W&J in three sets 3-6, 6-2, (10-8).
Bethany is now off until beginning a two-day road trip. The Bison will travel to Muskingum April 18 before continuing on to take on Thomas More in a PAC tilt April 19.
