BETHANY, W.Va. – Sophomore Emily Jump (Milford, Del./Polytech) fired a five-hit shutout, as the Bethany College softball team beat Westminster 6-0 in game two of their twinbill Wednesday to give the Bison a split after the Titans earned a 10-2 win in five innings in the opener.
Jump averted trouble in the first three innings, as she stranded a pair of Titans on base in each frame. The Bison, who were the away team in the second game, were able to break through for three runs in the third inning to give their pitcher the only runs she would need. A wild pitch plated the first run and that was followed by consecutive RBI singles by senior 3B Andrea Thomas (Toronto, Ohio) and sophomore catcher Liz Kletzli (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) for a 3-0 BC advantage.
A passed ball brought in the fourth Bethany run in the fifth inning and the Green and White put the game away with two tallies in the seventh. With the bases loaded, Jump hit a dribbler in front of the plate and the flip home was not in time to nab the Bison runner. Freshman SS Kristina Massie (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington Central) followed with an RBI single to center to expand the margin to 6-0.
Jump would make it stand, as she did not allow a hit over the final three innings. She retired Westminster in order in the fifth and again in the seventh to complete her first shutout of the year. In addition to scattering five hits, Jump struck out four and walked three in raising her record to 5-4.
At the plate, Jump also led the way by going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Thomas had two hits and scored twice and Kletzli singled twice, scored once and drove in one.
The game was a stark contrast to the opener, which saw the Titans erupt for four runs in the third inning and six more in the fourth to build a 10-0 lead. Bethany nearly kept the game alive by scoring once on an error in the fourth and again in the fifth on a two-out RBI triple from senior 2B Chelsea Butler (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview). But Butler was stranded at third following a ground out and the game was called due to the run rule.
Bethany was limited to just four hits in the game, two coming off the bat of sophomore RF Maria Vallone (Rochester, N.Y./Webster Schroeder). Senior Cortney Newland (Carmichaels, Pa.) started and took the loss for BC, falling to 6-4 for the year.
The Bison are back in action Thursday with a non-conference doubleheader at Muskingum at 3:30 p.m.
