WEXFORD, Pa. – After nearly averaging a double-double in two wins last week, Bethany College sophomore Kayla Taormina (Center Twp., Pa./Quigley) was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Player of the Week for Feb. 7.
In helping the Bison (11-10, 6-6) to a pair of big victories last week that boosted them to fourth place in the conference, the 5-8 guard averaged 18 points and 9.5 rebounds while shooting 54 percent (14-26) from the field and 60 percent (6-10) from the arc. Her first big performance came in a 66-58 triumph over Thiel, as she posted her third double-double of the year with 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, while also blocking a pair of shots.
On Saturday, Taormina scored 15 points in the first half at Grove City to push the Green and White out to a 38-24 halftime lead. The Wolverines would come back to take a brief lead, but BC went back in front and Taormina helped secure a 69-65 win by sinking two foul shots with 12 seconds to play. She finished the game with 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor, including 4-for-5 from the arc, and also totaled seven boards and two assists.
For the year, Taormina is leading the Bison in scoring with 10.5 points per game and ranks second in the PAC in three-point percentage (42.9), sixth in field goal percentage (47.2) and 14th in rebounding (6.0). Her numbers are even better in conference play, where she is putting up 12.4 points and 6.8 rebounds a contest.
“Kayla played really tough and was very instrumental in both wins last week,” said Bethany head coach Rebecca Upton. “That’s what Kayla can do, is be a fireball that leads our momentum and we’ll need her to continue to do that through the end of the regular season and into the conference tournament.”
A pre-physical therapy major, Kayla is the daughter of John & Lisa Taormina of Center Twp., Pa.
