MORGANTOWN, W.Va.- West Virginia University redshirt senior shortstop Grant Buckner was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the third time this season.
An Elkview, W.Va., native, Buckner scored his fourth overall conference honor following a strong showing in the Mountaineers’ regular-season finale against Rutgers.
Buckner went 6 for 14 this weekend, with three runs, one double, one home run and five RBIs. He had a standout game in the Mountaineers’ 14-5 victory over the Scarlet Knights on Saturday, going 2 for 4, including a grand slam home run. Buckner also extended his reaching base streak to 47 games, the fourth longest in the country.
Buckner won the BIG EAST’s regular-season batting title with a ..437 average in conference games. His is the first Mountaineer to win the honor since Lee Fritz did so in 2003. The Mountaineers (28-25, 14-13 BIG EAST) earned the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament and will face No. 5 Seton Hall on Wednesday, May 25, at 5 p.m., in Clearwater, Fla.
