PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates today agreed to terms on a minor league contract with infielder Anderson Hernandez. The deal includes a non-roster invite to Major League camp.
Hernandez, 29, hit .300 with a .366 on-base percentage, 25 doubles, six home runs, 53 RBI and 21 stolen bases over 136 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City during the 2011 season.
The switch-hitting infielder has appeared in the Majors over the span of seven seasons with the New York Mets (2005-07, 2009), Washington Nationals (2008-09), Cleveland Indians (2010) and Houston Astros (2010). Hernandez batted .220 with 13 runs, five doubles, three RBI and three stolen bases over 54 games combined in 2010 with the Indians and Astros.
The Pirates have now signed 16 Minor League free agents this offseason, nine of them with non-roster invites to big league spring training. They include: (With invites) Brandon Boggs, Jeff Clement, Nick Evans, Jake Fox, Hernandez, Ryota Igrashi, Shairon Martis, Jose Morales and Tim Wood; (Without) Kyle Cofield, Jose Diaz, Kris Johnson, Milver Reyes, Gerlis Rodriguez, Wyatt Toregas and Stefan Welch.
