A first half defensive battle was to be had at Alumni Field in New Martinsville Friday night. On a night that the Magnolia Blue Eagles were donning their Army National Guard uniforms, they put up one heck of a fight versus the Cameron Dragons in the first half.
Each team exchanged punts and defensive stops in the first and second quarters of this A contest. Klypson Wallace did early damage for Cameron as he scored from a yard out to start his big night, 17 carries 190 yards and 4 touchdowns. Magnolia came right back and answered with a Hunter Oates one yard touchdown run for the Blue Eagles. This tied the game a 6 in the first stanza.
Defense ruled the rest of the first half. The only other score came from Wallace again for the Dragons. Wallace also ran it in for the 2 to make the first half score 14-6. After the first half the game was much tighter than most would have thought, but the Eagles were fighting hard from the opening kick.
We always like to compare concession stands around the Valley at Ohio Valley Athletics. I met some friends at the game, and they did some concession stand critique for me. Duke and Slaton definitely liked the fries and slushies. Mom, Shannen, said the slushy tasted like it had actual strawberries in it. Slaton added that the hot dog was pretty good as well. Devin mentioned maybe the concession stand had some good offerings due to its proximity and relationship with Quinet’s.
Now we can get back to some game action, the second half began with an 83-yard touchdown run by Cameron quarterback Colsen Witchterman. This began a huge quarter for the Dragons, where they scored 32 points. Wallace was next from 15 yards out, Wichterman hit Slaton Pettit for the 2 to put the Dragons up 30-6.
Wichterman then hit Pettit for a touchdown, Wichterman then ran the 2 in himself. Cameron now led 38-6. Their final touchdown of the quarter came on a Wallace 4-yard touchdown run; Mason Scott ran in the 2 to put the Dragons up 46-6.
The ground game carried the Dragons on the night as they ran for 294 yards on 26 totes. Wichterman added 122 yards in the air going 6-7.
Gunner Lilley scored the final touchdown for Cameron from 3 yards. Wallace ran in another 2 pointer to grow the lead to 54-6 in favor of the Dragons. Next week Magnolia will be at home for their homecoming game vs Monroe Central. Cameron will be off this week, and they will be preparing for a road trip to Weirton to take on Madonna.
