The two-time state champion Cameron Girls basketball team is hosting their second annual basketball camp this week. Ovathletics took some time to check out the camp, to see what championship tips they are passing on to the girls. Girls entering grades 2 through 6 are welcome at the camp to learn all different types of basketball skills for this three-day event.
I was impressed how the high school players were running each station. Coach Petitt had the team set up drills for rebounding, defense, layups, passing, and dribbling. It was fun to watch the older girls teaching the youngsters the fundamentals of the game. You could tell by watching that the high school players had a real interest in instructing the kids.
After the drills they split the campers into groups to do a 1 on 1 tournament using the skills that the kids learned earlier in the morning. This was exciting to watch as the girls were into the competition, both the young ones and the high school players.
They returned from a short break to then jump into some basketball games. The teams were split into age groups and played 4-minute games. Again, using the skills, they learned from each station. The high school kids were the coaches and referees, which was fun to watch with them being so involved with the youngsters.
At the end of the day, awards were given out for various aspects of the camp. Some of the awards given out were best attitude and 1 on 1 champion for each grade level. The awards to choose from were mini basketballs, keychains, and bracelets. These were nice awards that give the campers something to work for each day. Along with this each of the youngsters were given a popsicle for their hard work during the first day of camp.
Coach Petitt is looking to grow the camp in the years to come. This year they had 22 for the first day. Most of the kids being from Cameron, but that is not a requirement. If you have girls that are interested in basketball and want to learn the game and have some fun, check out ovathletics.com for updates on next year’s camp.
