The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired right-hand pitcher Eliecer Cardenas from the Atlanta Braves as the player to be named in the Matt Diaz trade from August 31, 2011.
The 23-year-old Dominican native went 4-3 with seven saves and a 2.11 ERA in 45 minor league games this season, striking out 76 batters in his 59.2 innings of work.
Cardenas finished the season with Lynchburg in the Carolina League where he posted a 0.79 ERA (56.2ip/5er) and 75 strikeouts in 40 appearances.
Cardenas will be added to the High-A Bradenton Marauders roster.
In 100 games with the Pirates this season, Diaz hit .259 with no homers, 12 doubles and 19 RBI.
