Wheeling, WV, December 18, 2010—Wheeling Jesuit’s men’s basketball team enters the holiday break with a 4-2 overall record while improving to 3-2 in WVIAC play after defeating Davis & Elkins College (2-7,1-5 WVIAC), 90-83, at the Alma Grace McDonough Center on Saturday evening.
The Cardinals offense exploded midway through the first half with a 17-3 run, building a 32-13 advantage. Leading the scoring outbursts were Recardo Gaddy and Steve Catich, who traded scores each trip down the floor. Gaddy poured in 13 of his 23 total points in the first ten minutes of play while Catich threw in nine points. Wheeling Jesuit maintained a double-digit lead, pushing the spread to as many as 22 points and finishing the period with a 50-38 advantage.
After the break, Gaddy and Catich were at it again. The two traded buckets during the first four-and-a-half minutes of play, lifting the Cardinals to go ahead 56-40. D&E cut the Cardinal lead to five with 13:16 on the clock as Tim Turner and Ian Pinckney began to heat-up from beyond the arc.
Over the next six minutes, Jesuit pushed the lead back to 12 points as Catich scored on three straight possessions while Obi Ukwuoma turned in four points in two trips down the floor. The Cardinals controlled a 10-point lead until the final seconds of the game.
Catich led all scorers with 30 points which included a 13-for-13 effort from the foul line and an 8-for-11 showing from the field – Catich also collected eight rebounds. Gaddy followed with 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the floor while knocking down 3-of-5 shots from downtown.
Ukwuoma recorded a double-double which included a team-high 11 rebounds and 14 points while Ben Siefert collected nine points from beyond the arc on 3-of-4 shooting.
The Cardinals will be back in action at the Alma Grace McDonough Center on December 30th as they play host to Ohio University Eastern. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
