PITTSBURGH — The Boston Red Sox today signed infielder Pedro Ciriaco to a minor league deal. Ciriaco, 26, was designated for assignment by Pittsburgh in December to make room for outfielder Nate McLouth on the 40-man roster.
Ciriaco appeared in 23 games (33 at-bats) with Pittsburgh where he hit .303. He also played in 71 games with Triple-A Indy and hit .231 with seven doubles, three triples, two homers, 31 runs and 24 RBI.
Ciriaco traveled from Indianapolis to Pittsburgh six times over the season and Pirates Manager Clint Hurdle even joked during the season about him ranking up flier miles.
“I think there’s been a point and time this year where he’s made more fights than at-bats,” he said.
Ciriaco hit .238 while playing winter ball in the Dominican League this off-season in winter ball.
