MORGANTOWN – West Virginia women’s basketball senior co-captains Liz Repella and Madina Ali earned all-BIG EAST honors today as announced by the BIG EAST Conference.
Repella, who was named to the first team for the second consecutive season, becomes the fifth first-team all-conference member under head coach Mike Carey and only the second player in WVU history to earn the award in back-to-back seasons, as Olayinka Sanni did so in 2007 and 2008.
At guard, Repella leads the team in eight statistical categories, including scoring average (14.0 ppg), points (420), steals (61), 3-pointers made (58), 3-pointers attempted (171), field goals attempted (376), starts (30) and minutes played (1,021). She ranks fifth in the WVU record books for 205 career 3-pointers made and is only one of 27 players in the history of the program to reach the 1,000-point milestone as she has over 1,500 points to date.
With 22 20-point games under her belt, Repella has led the team in scoring 42 times, led the team in rebounding 31 times and has done so in 98 career and consecutive starts.
Ali earned her first-ever all-BIG EAST honor as she was named to the second team and becomes the 11th all-BIG EAST second team honoree under Carey. At forward, Ali holds the seventh-highest field goal percentage of 55.1 percent (147-of-267) in the BIG EAST.
As a starter for two seasons with the Mountaineers, Madina has collected 10 double-doubles, including a 32-point showing against Syracuse this season. She has led WVU in rebounding 32 times and scoring 11 times in 66 games played. Her scoring average of 13.1 points per game is the second-highest average for WVU and she leads the Mountaineers in rebounding as she averages 7.1 boards a game, the 10th-highest average in the conference.
Repella, Ali and the 10th-seeded WVU women’s basketball team take to the hardwood on Friday, March 4 at 6 p.m. as the Mountaineers take on the No. 15th seed Cincinnati at the XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
