On Wednesday afternoon, the San Diego Padres selected former Wheeling Central and Wheeling Jesuit’s Noah Mull in the 38th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Mull was the 1,144th overall pick.
Mull led the Cardinals to their best record in school history, finishing with 19 wins and 20 losses. The southpaw from Wheeling, WV completed his senior campaign with a 7-1 record and a WVIAC-best 2.09 earned run average.
Mull ranked second in NCAA Division II with 13.02 strikeouts per nine innings and 10th in hits per nine innings (6.27). He collected 81 strikeouts, allowing only 39 hits and 21 free passes in 56 innings pitched. The WVIAC Pitcher of the Year held his opponents to a .194 batting average, while tossing two shutouts and earning four complete game victories.
In addition, Mull was awarded the Daktronics Inc. and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year Awards followed by Third Team All-American Honors in both polls. Noah was also selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association 2nd Team All-Atlantic Region and was one of two WVIAC players to be honored for the inaugural DII Tino Martinez Award.
