PITTSBURGH — Although it’s a short sample size, rookie right-hander Jared Hughes has looked pretty confident on the mound in his two Major League appearances so far.
The former starter turned reliever has allowed just one hit over 2.2 innings with no walks and no strikeouts.
”This is a good story,“ Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. “Here’s a guy that was a starter, didn’t have success, the bullpen opened up a mentality for him because it wasn’t covering five or six innings. So, okay. I’m going to get the ball for one inning, maybe one inning-plus and just let it eat. It’s worked to his benefit.”
The 6’7” Hughes posted a 2.11 ERA in 35 games (42.2 innings) with Triple-A Indianapolis this season before being recalled earlier this month.
“I’m very pleased with what we’re seeing,” Hurdle said. “He has come in very focused. And it’s been fun to watch. He’s backed the two outings that he’s put out there so far. You see the ball coming out of his hand hot with some sink. It’s been good.”
