PITTSBURGH — The Pirates took advantage of the rosters expanding on Thursday by recalling catcher Jason Jaramillo from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Jaramillo, along with pitcher Brian Burres, who was also recalled today, drove up from Indianapolis yesterday.
“I think I’ve been getting back into the rhythm [of things],” Jaramillo said. “I played well to end the season there in Indy and I just want to pick up where I left off and find that rhythm and move forward.”
The Triple-A Indians are within three games of the Wild Card in the International League.
“They’re playing real well down there. That was fun,” he said. “This is our ultimate goal. We want to be here. But down there we played to win…I got a lot out of that.”
Having a third catcher helps Manager Clint Hurdle with more flexibility and more opportunity to get them in the game.
“There’s a safety net now where there hasn’t been all year,“ Hurdle said. “When you hit your second catcher, you play your second catcher. Knock on wood, it never happened this year, but if that guy goes down there’s some challenges to it. You got to put a position player behind the plate. So you have some different opportunities.”
Jaramillo made the club out of spring training when catcher Chris Snyder was placed on the disabled list. In four games before being optioned to Triple-A on April 13th, Jaramillo went 5-for-14 (.357 avg) with a RBI.
In 46 games this season while with Triple-A, Jaramillo batted .276 with two homers and 23 RBI. Jaramillo was limited to just the 46 games due to two trips to the disabled list this season.
“It’s definitely been a tough time,” Jaramillo said. “Getting back from the injury and what-not. I just try to look at the bright side of everything. I had some really good things happen this year. I had my first child. So I’m just trying to focus on the good things and move forward. We’ve still got a month left of good baseball and I’m here to just contribute.”
